Eddie Anderson...

My photo is in "The Photo Book" on page 117. The photo was taken by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia. Be sure to read the caption.

Altough this photo is "somewhat staged", I thought the photo makes a impression. What do you think the photographer is trying to say with this photo? Why do you think that the man is looking into the window but not at the food?

I find this to be a striking picture--worthy of its title "Hollywood": the shirtless, spiky-haired young guy with the omniscient glow on his face. I suppose the prompt wants us to see him looking at the phone, or at his own reflection, rather than at the food, even though we know he has agree to the $20 payment for the picture.

What I find most interesting about this photograph is the irony of the "Peace on Earth" cutting through the shot of the rocker, the burger, the music, the phone--each decidedly 'American.'

We have a divided country, a subdivided world, and this hope of peace (a backwards hope?)...

Why are the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer? What should we do about this? Do *we* have responsibility?

At first I had no idea of what the photographer was trying to achieve in this photo, but after I studied it for a minute I started to try and see the image from an artist’s point of view. I think the photographer was trying to make this staged picture look more like a fantasy of a recreated moment. In the foreground we see a classic diner with the 50s era, with the American hamburger served in a red plastic woven basket and the jukebox. The window sports a painted message that was often used during the 60s, “peace on earth”, while the man in the photo has more of a 70’s look. In a way the artist is combining all of these different elements from different eras creating multiple identities trying to make one personal image.
